Ticks on Dogs

Ticks are tiny parasites that attach themselves to a dog’s skin to feed on blood. They are also disease carriers and can bite humans too. Dogs infected with ticks usually feel itchy. Ticks thrive anywhere in a dog’s body, particularly in the ears, head, feet, neck, and groin. Dogs bitten by a tick may suffer from skin damage and tick paralysis, in which the transmitted toxic saliva can cause anemia, lethargy, fever, joint pains, and ultimately, paralysis. Regular grooming can help prevent pets from tick infections. Always perform a tick search on your dog, especially if you are residing in a tick-prone area. However, if you spot a tick on your dog’s skin, be careful in removing it as mouthparts can remain implanted in the skin. There are commercially available anti-tick products you may use, such as spot-on creams, shampoo, and anti-tick collar. Ask your vet Fayetteville, NC for a product that’s safe and effective for your dog. Read more for additional information.
