Mange in Dogs

Mange is a skin disease caused by mites and in dogs, it has 2 types:

Sarcoptic – also known as scabies; is highly contagious and may be transmitted from dog to dog. This can quickly spread especially if untreated.

Demodectic – is passed on to puppies by their mothers. This is not contagious. The typical symptom is hair loss around the eyes, forehead, and forepaws.

Demodectic mange may be localized in a few spots, especially in dogs with a normal immune system. It shows up as patches of hair loss and red, scaling skin. However, in a dog with a weakened immune system, they may grow out of control. This may result in scabbing, crusting, discharge, and infection. Your dog might lose most, if not all, his hair.

As with any health condition, a veterinarian should check your dog. Your veterinarian Plano, TX should be able to provide treatment that can give your pet relief from itchiness, scratching or pain. Some treatments might include a medicated shampoo, hair clipping, or topical application of an ointment to kill the mites.
