Have you encountered grass awns before? Grass awns (otherwise known as foxtails) are created by certain types of grasses that are in the seeding stage. Grass awns or foxtails are shaped like arrows and they can get attached to the skin of animals or your beloved pet and therefore they can spread among animals in your household as well. Grass awns or foxtails can stay attached in your beloved pet's eyes, nose, skin, as well as the ears. In other cases, they may get attached to the vulva, penis, or even right at the back of your pet's tonsils (throat area). Grass awns or foxtails can get inside your pet's skin and therefore it can get deep inside and go to some major organs of your beloved pet's body such as the heart or the lungs. In some cases, grass awns or foxtails can bring about irritation, swelling, infection, pain, or redness.
If you notice any of these signs, bring your pet to your animal hospital Cy-Fair immediately.
