Anal Gland Issues In Dogs

Anal glands are found close to the anal opening as a pair and produce some waxy substance. As your pet pushes stool out, it passes through the anal glands and places pressure on it causing it to excrete the substance which gives your pets their distinct identity through the secretions’ odor. It is also from these secretions that your pet uses to mark their territory by leaving their scent in that area.

These glands become a matter of concern when the anal sacs are impacted from not being emptied normally, causing them to swell and become uncomfortable and quite painful. In addition to that, the area becomes susceptible to infections. When there is a buildup of excessive contents, such as in severe cases, it could result in a rupture of the anal sacs, making it even worse because of the presence of an open wound.

Some breeds are more at risk with anal sac problems than others like the Chihuahua and miniature poodle. Aside from that, pets that are obese increase the risk of developing the problem as well. One tell-tale sign of your pet having anal sac issues is when they drag their butt on the floor.

Frequent anal sac issues should warrant a visit to your nearest veterinarians Louisville KY sooner rather than later.
