A History Of Contact Lenses

Do you wear contacts? If so, you're in good company. Contacts have been around for a long time. Actually, they have a pretty interesting history.

People have been experimenting with different glass and lenses for thousands of years. By 1636, Descartes experimented with putting a glass tube filled with liquid on the eye. This didn't work out very well, as it made blinking impossible. In 1827, Sir John Herschel experimented with taking corneal molds. He was on the right track, but it took another 60 years before glass production became advanced enough for his theory to be tested. The first true contact lens was made by Dr. Adolf Fick in 1888. By the 1920's, material manufacturing had advanced enough to make safer, more flexible lenses. These didn't allow the eye to breathe, so they were very uncomfortable. The contact lens that we know and love today was created in 1948. The rest is history!
