Why is My Dog’s Nose Wet?

Updated: Apr 25

If you have a pet dog, you may wonder why your pet's nose is often wet. A dog's nose is often moist. One reason is that canines have a delicate mucus layer surrounding the nose, making it easier for the odor particles to adhere to their nose, improving their olfactory senses. Also, dogs often lick their noses. They allow their nose to stay wet while smelling and tasting.

Why is it that sometimes a dog's nose is dry? Most pups will get a dry nose eventually, but this is not necessarily a cause for worry. Spending time in the hot or arid weather can dry out your dog's nose. Brachycephalic canine breeds such as Bulldogs and Pugs are prone to having dry noses because licking their nose is complex and challenging, and the risk of clogging the tear ducts that usually empty into the snout is high.
