Although these dogs bark at approaching strangers, English Springers do not make an ideal guard dog. With their gentle, affectionate nature, they may simply seek attention even from anyone. It's also due to this personality that English Springers do not do well with a single owner. They love to be with people, and leaving them alone for too long does not work for them.
English Springers may not look so similar to one another. Generally, sporting/hunting dogs were bred based on their purpose— either as hunting or show dogs. As time passed, the two varieties became very different from each other— the same case happened with the English Springer.
For almost 70 years, hunting and show dogs have been on separate gene pools. Field Springers look athletic with their short coat, pointy nose, and short ears. In addition, they can smell better and get trained easier to give them better hunting ability.
