Two harmful chemicals are present in chocolate - caffeine, and theobromine. Even though these two chemicals affect the body in much the same way, theobromine is the more toxic substance of the two. The reason for this is that theobromine is present in chocolate in high amounts, and in dogs, it has a long-lasting effect. A dog’s body is not very efficient at theobromine breakdown when compared to human bodies, therefore, this chemical accumulates in their blood.

Because of this, dogs are unfortunately quite sensitive to the chemical theobromine causing many health issues. It could affect the brain, kidneys, muscles, guts, and heart. Even though poisoning by chocolate is rarely deadly to pet dogs, even small amounts of specific chocolate types could cause critical illness.

But even if your pet dog has not ingested enough chocolate amounts to poison him, the high amounts of fat and sugar in chocolate might cause various problems like pancreatitis or stomach upsets. Therefore, you must always get in touch with your nearest vet Sarasota, FL for advice should you have concerns.
