Why Cats Have A Low Thirst Drive

The ancestors of cats lived in desert regions and their bodies adapted to the existing conditions. There was unsteady water supply and their systems evolved to depend on their prey as an important source of water. Of course, they won’t pass up a chance to drink water when they happen to come across a good source. But they relied on their prey as a source of fluid intake.

With domestication, most cats are confined indoors and given kibble for food. They don’t have to hunt in order to thrive. But kibble has a low moisture content. Unfortunately, their bodies are slow to react to poor water intake until they are very dehydrated. Without adequate water intake, a cat on a kibble diet can be undergoing chronic dehydration which can eventually lead to a lot of serious health issues down the road. It’s usually the kidneys that bear the brunt of poor water intake.

It is recommended that you contact with your veterinarian Metairie, LA before making major changes on your pet’s diet.
