Why Cats and Milk Don’t Mix

It seems like cats and milk go hand-in-hand. And many cat owners probably feed their feline friends milk. But the truth is that cats and milk aren’t really a good pair. That’s because most adult cats are lactose-intolerant, just like many humans.

A small bit of milk probably won’t hurt your adult cat, but too much is likely to cause problems like an upset stomach, vomiting, and diarrhea. Most adult cats don’t possess enough lactase in their digestive systems to process lactose, the main enzyme found in milk. And while kittens need their mother’s milk during the nursing stage for proper nutrition, they begin producing less and less lactase in the gut as they grow, gradually becoming lactose-intolerant.

If you must give your cat dairy, try a tiny bit of cheese or yogurt. Or, even better, a “cat milk” that has the lactose removed. And consult your nearest vets Brampton ON for more advice on your pet’s nutrition.
