Why Basking Is Important For Red-Eared Sliders

Basking is an essential activity for turtles. During basking, a turtle takes a break from the waters by drying himself in a comfortable and dry location in his enclosure. Elevate the basking area using rocks and logs to separate it from the water. The basking spot should be easy to reach and accessible. Your turtle should not have difficulty reaching the basking spot or exert too much effort. This can discourage him from basking.

The basking spot should have a warmer temperature than the water. However, ensure it is not too hot for your turtle to handle. A hot basking spot can cause hyperthermia, and it can burn the shell of your turtle. Feeding your turtle before he proceeds to bask to encourage and motivate him is also a good idea.

When your red-eared slider starts basking, prevent him from doing something to bother him. This will interrupt his basking moments, and instead of basking, his attention might be redirected. He might end up doing something else rather.
