When Your Cat's Behavior Goes Into Overdrive

There are a variety of reasons why some feline behaviors, like scratching, chewing, or licking becomes compulsive. Without proper intervention, it could eventually cause damage to your cat’s skin and hair coat.

Sometimes, cat parents are unaware of their pet’s compulsive behavior until they notice excessive hair loss, especially along the back or stomach. Some cats can take it a lot further and engage in self-mutilating behaviors and end up with lots of irritated areas or hotspots.

Compulsive scratching, chewing, or licking behaviors can develop in cats of any age or breed, but it is more commonly observed in Oriental breeds, such as Siamese cats. Female cats have also been observed to be more likely to engage in these behaviors compared to males.

Considering that there are several potential reasons for the behavior, including medical problems, be sure to consult with your veterinarian Louisville, KY so the cause can be identified and addressed appropriately.
