What To Do When Your Pet Gets Skunked

Skunks spray a foul-smelling liquid as a defense mechanism when they feel threatened. If in case your pet came in contact with a skunk, check your pet’s body for any signs of wounds and scratches. If there are any breaks on your pet’s skin surface, it is best advised to seek immediate help from your veterinarian so the wound/s can be attended to properly. It is also important to know if your pet’s rabies vaccination is still effective. Your pet may need a booster shot for optimal protection. Skunks are important carriers of the virus that causes rabies. It is important to keep an eye on your pet especially if there are skunks in the vicinity.

If you notice that your pet has been sprayed by a skunk, immediately get a moist towel or hypoallergenic pet wet wipes to clean the affected areas. The skunk spray is most often seen around the eyes as well as the nose area of pets. Clean the affected area thoroughly since the liquid is painful to your pet’s eye. If you see redness or excessive tearing, contact your animal hospital Matthews, NC for proper management. Read more here.
