A puppy mill, sometimes called a puppy farm, is basically a large-scale dog breeding business usually pursued by an experienced dog owner and breeder. A puppy mill is fairly common these days and many of them have poor living conditions because many of these dog breeders focus more on profits and much less on the wellbeing as well as the health of the dogs in their kennel.
Because the focus is on making a lot of profits, many puppy mills produce a large number of puppies by overworking the breeding dogs. This practice puts the health of the dogs at risk and it may give rise to genetic defects on future puppies. Breeding dogs are overworked because they undergo regular mating whenever they are in heat. The sad and unfortunate fact is that many of these overworked dogs will end up euthanized when the dog breeder thinks they have gone past their "breeding primes".
