What Is the Third Eyelid And Why Is It Important To Dogs?

As surprising as it may seem, it is true that your dog has three eyelids. While a dog's third eyelid is not easily noticeable, this is an important part of their body that has a lot of benefits.

The third eyelid is responsible for maintaining moisture in a dog's eyes. Without it, the eyes will be dry and will be more prone to bacterial infection and irritation. Most of the time, frequent dryness of the eyes may lead to conjunctivitis, swelling, inflammation, or eye ulcer.

However, because this membrane is located in the eyes which are highly sensitive body organs, there is a risk of developing a prolapse or displacement of the third eyelid. This is called the cherry eye or the bulging or protruding membrane of the eye. It results in a small, red bulge in the eye which may affect a dog's vision and eyesight.
