What Are The Causes Of Feather Plucking In Pet Birds?

Feather plucking can occur for a variety of reasons. Some birds pluck their feathers to line their nests while for others feathers fall off when they’re preening or grooming. However, feather plucking in captive birds can be a cause for concern especially if it’s more than just preening and grooming. It could be caused by an underlying health condition, poor nutrition, or a number of environmental or lifestyle factors. There is a need to address this behavioral disorder before it can cause serious skin infection and other more serious problems.

The cause of feather plucking in pet birds is generally categorized into two--

  • Medical causes - an issue affecting the bird’s skin and/or feather or exposure to stressors are important predisposing factors of the behavior. Diet, exposure to toxins, and infections are also potential causes.

  • Behavioral causes - pet birds that are bored, jealous, suffering from stress or anxiety, unsuitable diet, loneliness, sleep-deprived, over-stimulated, and lack of physical and mental stimulation can trigger feather plucking.
