The anal glands or sacs in cats are pouches in pair found on either side of the anus before its opening. Sweat glands or sebaceous glands are along the walls of this anal sac that would produce a strong smell from the fluids stored within the sac that will be release to the passage of the anus through a duct. Both sexes of cats have anal glands. When they excrete feces, there is pressure exerted on the anal sacs that squeezes out some of this foul smelling fluid and mixed together with the excreted feces.
This anal sac fluid acts as a signature of each cat because the scent is different from one cat to another. They are the markers for territory and the cats use it as such, show the other animals that they are around, and keep their enemies off. If there is a problem with the anal sac, you may see him dragging his butt along the floor or licking his behind.
Frequent anal sac issues should require a visit to your veterinary clinic Ashburn VA so your pet can undergo a thorough examination and the problem could be addressed appropriately.
