Ways to Approach a Dog That Isn’t Yours

If you see a dog wandering on the side of the road you should approach with caution. If you are walking along the road with your own dog, keep your distance from the strange dog or turn around in the other direction. If you are walking alone and the dog appears lost or confused, approach slowly talking to it in a low voice. Try to see if it has a collar with ID tags. If so, you can try to approach the dog or have the dog approach you so that you can see the information on the tags. If the dog does not approach, do not force him or he will run. Call your local vet or animal control and report that a wandering dog has been spotted at your specific location.
