Vocalization in Cats

There are many ways cats vocalize to communicate and express how they feel. They cry, yowl, growl or hiss when they are experiencing fear, pain, distress or confusion. Cats that are ill need to be examined by a veterinarian to address the medical problem. Some cats vocalize before they expel an ingested hairball. Some cats meow because they feel lonely and want attention, and long for their owners' company. Some cats make lots of noises when they are in heat and want to mate with cats of the opposite sex, especially those that are not spayed or neutered. However, a cat vocalizing more than usual, which is an increase in frequency or volume, could be suffering from a behavior problem. If the cause is not a medical problem, pet owners need to observe if changes in the household routine or the introduction of new family members cause the cat to feel stressed and anxious.
