Tyzzer’s disease in hamsters is a serious infection caused by Clostridium piliforme, a type of bacteria. The infection is highly contagious and can quickly be transmitted from hamster to hamster within a short length of time. Prevention is still the best way to protect your pet against this serious health issue.
Always keep the hamster’s enclosure and immediate environment clean and well-maintained. Bedding must be removed at least once a week and replaced with a new one.
The cage should undergo a thorough cleaning and disinfection at least once a month. This, coupled with weekly replacement of old bedding should be observed.
Avoid exposing your pet hamster to stressful conditions. Stress is an important predisposing factor of illness in hamsters. Hamsters hate loud noises, being frightened, or mishandled.
Sudden changes in your pet’s health and well-being should be brought to the attention of your recommended vets Columbia MD.
