If there are dogs from a single breed that can be considered a “saint” because of their ability to do good, it would be Saint Bernard.
The history and origin of this dog breed are rich and meaningful. Various speculations and data claim how these pups entered civilization and made a difference since their existence.
The Saint Bernard dogs are native to Switzerland and are a mixed breed of a Mastiff and an Alps native dog. Before becoming known as the “Saint Bernards,” these dogs were called Baur hounds.
At some period in history, these hounds were employed by Bernard de Menthon, an archdeacon, who built a resting place for travelers. The dogs served as “guards” of the area. Earlier beliefs claimed that the hounds were used by some monks in the area to help look for travelers in need.
The hounds are good at finding paths and have high endurance. Historical data show that the Baur hounds saved 2,500 tired or lost travelers.
