Separation Anxiety in Dogs

When a dog develops a strong bond or dependence to his owner or carer (if another person or family member), such a dog can show intense distress or anxiety when the time comes when the owner or carer leaves. The key separation anxiety signs you need to look out for are elimination, barking, becoming withdrawn, or even destruction. Many dogs are highly instinctive and can sense when their owner or carer is leaving the house. Such a dog might keenly observe some pre-departure activities which include jangling car keys, opening of the garage door, or even grabbing a purse. A dog with separation anxiety would manifest signs soon or right after observing such pre-departure activities.

In order to treat separation anxiety in dogs, experts and vets may use behavior training that will help alleviate apprehension as well as nervousness. This will also include helping dogs get gradually familiar with longer spans of separation or inattention from the carer or owner.
