Safety Tips When Boating With Your Dog

Find a space that you think is comfortable for your dog and show him that area is his. If that place is on the boat's deck, place a non-slip mat with a towel as a cover. Put treats to tell him the spot belongs to him. If he was trained to have a specific place on the land (stationing behavior), you might also apply the same in the boat.

Prioritize your dog's safety, especially if he's small, since they're more prone to fall off the boat. Use a life jacket even if he loves swimming to protect him if some accidents ever happen. If you can get some fingers into the jacket, it means the vest fits him.

Bring a floating leash to make sure he won't get stuck in the boat or water. Leashes also make it easier to grab your pet. Also, keep your dog hydrated. Applying a dog sunscreen is also advised if your pet has a pink nose/naked tips of the ears.

Make sure that your pet’s preventatives and vaccines are up to date before outdoor excursions. Call your veterinary hospital Gresham, OR for information.
