Rivalry issues are very common in multi-pet households. Aside from the instinctive need to form a social hierarchy, there is rivalry for resources that are available especially if these are not enough for all pets. In the process of determining who’s going to occupy the highest rungs of the social ladder, pets may get into fights and other displays of aggressive behavior. These squabbles eventually result in more dominant pets lording it over the submissive ones.
Aside from being alert for aggressive behavior, there are subtle signs of dominance that you should be aware of. These include dominant dogs leaning over a more submissive dog or a submissive dog rolling on its back. However, there will come a time when a submissive dog challenges a more dominant dog and there will be a lot of snarling, growling, and fighting.
Persistent aggressive behavior exhibited by any dog should be brought to the attention of your veterinarian Aurora, CO or animal behaviorist.
