Reasons Why Dogs Get Hot Spots

A dog suffering from some form of skin infection can have a hot spot on his body. First, a hot spot refers to an infected part in the skin. The spot appears wet and hot. These can be found on the head, hip, and chest area. The hot spot is painful to touch.

Here are the possible reasons for having a hot spot:

● Allergic reaction

● Skin reaction from insect or pest bites

● Lack of grooming

● Infection in the ear and eyes

● Continuous licking and chewing on the skin out of boredom or stress

● Matted and dirty hair coat

● Result of swimming

● Exposure to rain

● Licking of the skin due to hip dysplasia or anal sac disease

It has been observed that dogs with long hair coats can easily have a hot spot. Hot spots can easily multiply since the dog will chew and lick on the affected part. If you notice any red spot on your dog, you should give it some medical attention. However, if the hotspot is oozing and is causing your dog pain and discomfort, a visit to your pet clinic Washington DC should be made sooner rather than later.
