Protection From Canine Influenza

Canine Influenza, or dog flu, is a viral infection that can affect dogs. Dogs suffering from the flu virus can transmit the virus through nasal secretions. Infected dogs are capable of infecting others even if they are not showing signs that they are sick. There is a high percentage of animals getting sick with dog flu after exposure. Fortunately, this is non-life-threatening. But the dogs will show flu-like symptoms for a few weeks until they get better.

Dogs that show flu-like symptoms should be isolated immediately. Even dogs that have suspected exposure to the virus should also be isolated because they might infect other healthy animals. The vet recommends 1-3 weeks of isolation.

Pet owners can also become carriers of canine influenza when they handle an infected dog. Thus, the pet owners are reminded to wash their hands after assisting the sick dog. For an added precaution, the beddings and other stuff of the infected dog should also be washed and sanitized. Any household disinfecting product can remove the virus. If you have any questions or concerns about your pet’s health and/or behavior, don’t hesitate to contact your vet clinic Kerrville TX for more information and advice.
