Protect Your Dog From Heatstroke

The best way to avoid heatstroke from happening to your pet is to not let him out in the extreme heat. Avoid tying up your pet anywhere that does not have shade. Never leave your pet inside a locked vehicle, which is now considered a crime in most states. On a day around 85 degrees, it only takes ten minutes to elevate the temperature to 102 degrees, then in thirty minutes, the temperature soars to 120 degrees or more. Cracking a window open will do no good and a trapped dog inside can have heatstroke in fifteen minutes or less.

It will be best to go walking your pet dog late in the evening or early in the morning when the temperatures are not that high yet. Should you have challenges accommodating this schedule, perhaps investing in a cooling vest for your pet. Include as well a pair of doggie shoes to shield his paws from overheating and getting burned. Lots of breaks to take in water are essential when walking your pet in temperatures over 85 degrees.

Heatstroke signs include drooling, weakness, staggering, glazed eyes, and heavy panting. Should it seem like your pet is suffering from heatstroke, immediately take him to an area that is climate controlled so that his body temperature can be slowly lowered. Lay down towels soaked in cold water on your dog’s belly, as that part has less fur, slowly raising the temperature while you contact your veterinarian Lewisville, TX for the next steps.
