Many overweight senior rabbits suffer from sore hocks (technically known as pododermatitis). The problem usually affects the rabbit’s hind feet and hocks (that part of the hind leg that makes contact with the ground when the rabbit is sitting. Affected rabbits may experience hair loss on the affected foot. There may also be redness, swelling, and thickening of the skin. In advanced cases, there may be scabs and draining areas. Rabbits suffer from severe pain and discomfort thus prompt veterinary intervention is important.
For mild cases where the only symptoms are redness and some swelling, simple changes in the rabbit’s diet and immediate environment may be all that is needed to alleviate symptoms.
