Many types of external parasites can cause intense itching in cats and dogs. These parasites include the following:
Sarcoptes mites (sarcoptic mange or scabies) -- The spider-like mites burrow under the skin of their host to lay eggs. Their presence causes intense itching in pets. The mites tend to congregate around the dog’s ears, legs, elbows, and face. Loss of hair and skin irritation are mostly concentrated around these areas.
Demodex mites (demodectic mange) -- Kittens are mostly affected. Cases usually start from a primary source.
Ear mites -- Affected cats and dogs suffer from intense itching and discomfort around their ears causing them to scratch and shake their head persistently.
Fleas -- Many pets only experience slight itching when they have fleas. However, some cats and dogs are extremely sensitive to an allergen that is present in the saliva of fleas. Even a bite or two can trigger intense itching and scratching.
