Similar to other animals, parakeets can acquire parasitic worms like roundworms and flatworms commonly. A parakeet can, unfortunately, suffer from acquiring twenty-three different kinds of worms. They usually can get these worms from infected water, food, birds, or the environment. Close contact with areas infested with worms can transmit the parasites quickly to the parakeet. Feeding them wild insects will significantly expose them to these parasites as well. Insects that have parasites in them can also infect your bird’s water and food.
A parakeet that is infected with these parasites will experience severe diarrhea. Despite sufficient food intake, sudden weight loss may still occur, coupled with underdeveloped growth. The bird will also appear lethargic and weak as well. You must be careful where you store and place your parakeet’s food. Make sure that you keep their immediate environment clean daily to lower the chances of exposure to these parasitic worms.
