MYTH: Dogs Eat Grass When They Have An Upset Stomach

There are many misconceptions and beliefs about dogs and grass. People assume that dogs eat grass to drive themselves to vomit. However, others think dogs eat grass to satisfy their nutritional needs. These beliefs sound reasonable and trustworthy, but science says otherwise.

There is a study conducted regarding the effect of grass on dogs. Only 22% of the dog participants were reported to have vomited after consuming grass. In addition, only 8% displayed sickly symptoms after eating grass. This only shows that grass won’t make all dogs vomit.

This result might make you wonder, “Why do dogs eat grass?” Scientists assume that dogs consume grass for biological reasons. They believe that grass helps to purge the parasites inside the body of a dog or cat. However, this should not motivate you to feed grass to your dog. Veterinarians don’t recommend it. While your dog peacefully eats grass, he might already be consuming chemicals sprayed on it. The chemicals can harm your dog’s health.
