Contrary to popular belief, milk and other dairy products may not be the best food options or snack options for cats. Typically, cats are lactose intolerant. An intolerance to lactose means that cats can really digest milk or other dairy products. What about kittens? Turns out, the kittens have the enzymes needed to digest milk. When kittens are given milk alternatives they are able to digest it with little to no trouble. As kittens mature into adults, however, they lose the enzymes and begin having trouble digesting milk. The lactose is not digestible and instead ferments in a cat’s stomach sometimes causing diarrhea or vomiting. Signs of lactose intolerance often occur within 8 to 12 hours of eating products with lactose. If you’ve recently given your cat milk and you’ve noticed some changes in your cat’s behavior or eating then there may be a lactose reaction. Contact your vets Acupuncture.
