Measures That May Help With Submissive Urination In Dogs

While submissive urination is a normal canine behavior, there are instances when it can worsen and will need proper intervention. Here are some measures that you can try if your dog’s submissive urination has worsened:

  • Avoid situations that trigger the behavior such as too much excitement or leaning over to pet your dog (this is often perceived by dogs as a dominant gesture). This is also true with hugging. If your causes your dog to leak a little, try to ignore him for the first few minutes until he calms down.

  • Boost your dog’s confidence as dogs with poor social confidence tend to exhibit the behavior.

  • Counter-conditioning involves preventing an undesirable behavior by prompting a contrasting behavior. Instead of greeting your dog when you get home, bring him outside for a game of fetch. This will keep him busy and focused thereby forgetting the need to pee.

  • Avoid scolding or dog or displaying threatening body language that can trigger your pet’s submissive tendencies.

  • Limit your pet’s water intake but ensure that there is adequate water intake.

Do call your vet Ellicott City, MD if you have concerns about your pet’s elimination habits or water intake.
