Making A Cat-Friendly Christmas Tree

Consider how much your cat enjoys chasing and crushing a long-tailed toy mouse, feather or yarn. Then, imagine its reaction when it sees enticing items dangling from a Christmas tree. Your cat's curiosity should not prevent you from putting up a decorated tree. However, it will help if you take the following precautions:

• Hang non-breakable ornaments high, leaving the lower part unadorned.

• Ensure that your pine tree has a solid base with a covered water container. The water from the tree may contain germs, bacteria, or fertilizers, so do not allow your cat to drink from the container.

• You should hide excess light wires so your cat does not gnaw on them.

• Keep lighted candles a safe distance away from your cat's reach.

• Many seasonal plants are toxic to cats. Mistletoe, poinsettias, lilies, and holly berries are among them, so keep them out of reach of your cat.
