Maine Coon Cat Swallowed a Penny

You may not see your cat chewing or biting on things as much as your dog. However, cats have still been kn0own to get mesmerized by shiny objects like loose change and accidentally swallow it while examining it. Yes, ‘change swallowing’ may be more common in dogs, but it can happen to cats too. Swallowing a penny can be dangerous. Prior to 1982, pennies were made primarily out of copper. In 1982, the government approved pennies to be made mostly out of zinc with only a thin layer of copper. Zinc may be cheap, but it’s highly toxic to cats. If your Maine Coon has swallowed a penny, please call your vet right away. It doesn’t take long for the copper to wash away exposing your cat to toxic levels of zinc. Symptoms may include vomiting and diarrhea, blood in urine, yellow mucous, liver and kidney failure, anemia, etc. Learn more here or talk with your vet Shreveport, LA.
