Reptiles are homeothermic animals, which means their body temperature is regulated by the temperature of their external environment. Each species of reptile have their so-called ‘preferred optimum temperature zone (POTZ) at which optimum metabolism, immune function, and digestive function are possible. Problems can develop if their POTZ is not met. Food may not be digested properly that can lead to poor body condition. Aside from diet, temperature and UV light have an important impact on the weight and health of reptiles. They need adequate exposure to UV light to activate vitamin D that is present in their skin. This process is important so calcium can be absorbed from their food and used in the body. Feeding your pet reptile the wrong type of food can also lead to gout, mineralization of soft tissues (due to excess intake of calcium and vitamin D3), and fatty liver syndrome.
