Your chinchilla descended from desert dwelling creatures so he could get very frightened or stressed if you him clean with a water bath. He would prefer a dust bath. Purchase chinchilla sand from a reputable pet dealer. This sand is fine enough to clean your chinchilla but coarse enough to not cause respiratory issues. Consider buying a dust bath or use a low-sided plastic container. Put a few inches of chinchilla sand in the container and place it in your pet’s enclosure. Hopefully he will jump right in and roll around but if he doesn’t, remove the bath after about 15 minutes so he doesn’t use it as a litter box. Eventually your chinchilla’s instincts will kick in and he will roll around in the dust bath to get clean. Offer the dust bath to your chinchilla several times a week to keep his fur clean and shiny.
