The deafening sounds and the array of lights that lit up the sky can be very frightening not only for dogs and cats but also for rabbits and guinea pigs. Signs that you should be on the lookout for include the following:
Stomping of their back legs
Appearing restless or motionless
Attempts to escape or hide
Displays of aggressive behavior
Grinding of the teeth
Reduced appetite
Change in elimination habits
To protect your pet from the effects of fireworks, it’s a good idea to bring your pet’s hutch inside the house. Place it in a quiet room or if there’s no space or suitable place inside your home, an unused shed or garage will do. But if the hutch is too big to be moved, you can partly cover it with thick blankets to block out the light and provide some sound-proofing. Playing some music that’s relaxing or turning on the TV can also help muffle the sounds from the fireworks. Closing the doors and windows, and drawing close the curtains can also help muffle the sounds from outside. There should also be a hiding place, such as a cardboard box with holes, inside your pet’s hatch. Make sure it’s filled with plenty of bedding where they could burrow in.
