Some probiotics require refrigeration or they will spoil. Lower temperatures maintain the survival of the microbes within these products, therefore you must carefully read the storage instructions per probiotic sample. And just because they have been stored in a cool place, they do have an expiration date, so make sure to check that out also.
Probiotics that are okay to store at room temperature usually contain lesser live beneficial microbes than what's stated in their packaging. Also, probiotic products which are freeze-dried will have a longer shelf-life than their refrigerated counterparts and/or those which are stored in powdered form. These probiotics in powder form are sensitive to moisture and lose effectivity when subjected to it. So be cautious when open and closing the lid of the container.
Probiotic additives to pet food will not live through the processing up to storage. To maximize the digestive effect of a probiotic on your dog, it must be taken with meals. Although it can be taken after meals or maybe after drinking water, to dilute the stomach acid and the probiotic microbes can move to the intestines fast.
