Is Your Cat Fat?

Excess weight is not without its negative effects. Similar to humans, being overweight or obese can increase a cat’s risk to developing serious health issues that impact their health and longevity. If you are not sure if your cat is on the ‘fat’ side, there are simple ways to check without going to the vet.

One method is to try gently squeezing the cat’s rib cage. If his ribs can easily be felt, he’s probably within healthy weight limits. However, if you need to exert some pressure so you could feel your pet’s ribs, he may need to lose some weight.

Another way to check if your cat is carrying excess weight or not is to look at his waistline while you’re standing above him. Ideally, the cat’s body should be slender from his stomach to his behind.
