Otterhounds are considered an old breed. They were bred in England, with Bloodhounds and other breeds as ancestors. They're believed to be in existence for more than 5 centuries now, but today, they're a rare breed. In fact, the Otterhounds' population is fewer than a thousand, with 250-500 of them in the US. Every year, there are only 4-7 litters born in Canada and the US. So if you want an Otterhound, expect that there are difficulties in finding a puppy.
There's no sure reason why this breed is uncommon, but one thing's for sure— their personality is not the reason for this. Otterhounds are known as "class clowns," with their affectionate, sweet, and fun-loving nature. This breed is also independent and not very demanding of people's attention. They greet people with enthusiasm and will go on to finish their naps afterward.
Take note that these dogs are large and take up a lot of space. In fact, small female Otterhounds may weigh around 65 pounds. On the other hand, large males may weigh up to 125 pounds.
