Infectious Stomatitis (Mouth Rot) in Snakes

Snakes are seldom sick, but that doesn’t mean they never get sick. In fact, one of the common health conditions that many snakes face is infectious stomatitis. This is also referred to as mouth rot. It’s basically an infection of the mouth or oral cavity. It occurs when the snake’s immune system is suppressed and unable to fight off bacteria particular the bacteria in the oral cavity. When this happens, infection can occur along with small hemorrhages on the gums or excessive amounts of mucus or pus in the mouth. Inflammation around the lips is also seen. You may notice your snake with his mouth open as though he’s breathing through it. This is a sign of the infection. It often occurs due to stress, poor living environments, poor diet, etc. Immediate attention and possible antibiotics will be needed. Click or call your pet clinic Greater Cincinnati to learn more.
