Did you know that iguanas like other lizards, snakes and turtles can get mouth rot? What is mouth rot? Medically, it is known as necrotic stomatitis. Stomatitis refers to an inflammation of the mouth or the oral cavity. The condition generally appears as inflammation or small hemorrhages on the gums or as excessive amounts of mucus in the mouth that may contain blood or pus. Lesions and hemorrhages could also appear on the inside edge of the Iguana’s lip area. When mouth rot occurs your Iguana may have a severely swollen mouth and may appear to be breathing through his mouth. In most cases mouth rot occurs as a secondary condition of another illness or injury including poor nutrition, stress, improper environmental temperatures or overcrowding.
