How To Prevent Water Intoxication In Pets

When it's hot, your pet might drink more than what it usually drinks. This need for more water is due to electrolytes. By providing drinks filled with electrolytes, your pet will no longer feel so thirsty. Most importantly, electrolyte imbalance will not occur.

If there is an opportunity for your dog to drink too much water, you might want to offer an electrolyte-based drink instead. You can give bone broth, coconut water, or electrolyte solution for pets. You can also give unflavored or unsweetened electrolytes for kids.

Most pets need an ounce of fluid according to their body weight. But when it’s hot, pets may need to drink more than what they used to drink. Cats and dogs release their sweat through their paw pads. They will also lose water when they lick their bodies.

You cannot tell how much water your pet needs, especially when they spend time playing. But when you see your pet near a water source, you should give it break time and toilet break.

Consult your veterinarian Ellicott City, MD about the best way to protect your pet from various health issues.
