How Long Can You Leave A Dog Alone?

A dog will require time, effort and commitment. This is one of the major considerations that every person who is planning to bring home a dog should carefully think about. One of the common questions that many pet parents have is how long a dog should be left alone?

The first consideration is how long a dog lasts without a bathroom break. Adult dogs tend to hold it in longer than puppies with their smaller bladders.

Generally, dogs need to pee between 3-5 times a day, at different times of the day. Puppies and senior pets need more frequent potty breaks. As a rule of thumb, the common time limits for each lifestage is determined as follows—

  • Puppies – one hour for every month of age (so a 2-month old puppy can wait for at least 2 hours to urinate.

  • Adult dogs from one year of age and up can wait up to 6-8 hours

  • Senior dogs from 8 years old and up – depending on the dog’s size and health status, can wait anywhere from 2-6 hours.

Sudden changes in your pet’s frequency of urination should be brought to the attention of a veterinarian New Orleans, LA.
