How Important Is Dental Health for Cats?

Cats are naturally independent and self-sufficient, but they still need proper health care to thrive and this includes their dental health, too.

Dental disease is the most common illness that causes cats to be euthanized in animal shelters. It's also one of the most preventable problems that afflict cats of all ages.

Cats can develop the periodontal disease—a condition that causes inflammation around the teeth—which can lead to gingivitis and eventually tooth loss if left untreated. This disease is caused by a build-up of plaque on the teeth, which damages gums, bones, and tissues surrounding them.

Periodontal disease can be detected with routine annual checkups performed by your veterinarian. Early detection is key because it will allow your vet to treat the problem before it becomes serious enough to cause permanent damage or even death.

Poor dental health can place Fluffy at risk of developing other health problems as well, including:

● Gingivitis - an inflammation of the gum tissue that may lead to tooth loss

● Tooth decay

● Oral tumors

● Oral abscesses

● Heart and lung infections
