How Do Guinea Pigs Get Mites ?

A small number of mites in guinea pigs is quite normal and is not usually a cause for concern as they won’t usually give rise to any problem. However, certain situations can pave the way for an increase in the mite population that can eventually lead to an infestation. Mites can easily transfer from one guinea pig to the next. However, poor sanitation such as an enclosure that is not cleaned regularly, dirty or contaminated bedding can also increase a guinea pig’s risk of acquiring mites. Other factors that can make guinea pigs more vulnerable to mite infestation are exposure to stressors, a compromised immune system, or poor grooming (such as when the rabbit is overweight or suffering from joint problems). Pregnant guinea pigs and those that are very young or old or suffering from illnesses also have increased vulnerability to mite infestations.
