How Do Cracked Hooves Affect Horses?

If you check the horse’s hooves before and after every riding session, you might notice any cracks in the hoof wall. If you are not aware, a hoof wall is similar to a fingernail or toenail. It is made up of keratin and protects the hooves against infection or moisture.

Some of the cracks in the hoof wall may not require treatment. But let these cracks remind you that the hooves might be exposed to moisture. The horse might have experienced an injury in the past.

There are several types of hoof cracks. The grass crack is only superficial and will not hurt the horse.

The vertical crack or sand crack may be due to excessive stress or traumatic injury at the coronary band. This type of crack might even lead to the dog becoming lame.

The horizontal crack is usually from abscesses that formed in the coronary band. It developed into a gap in the hoof wall. Although the horse may become lame due to injuries, the crack that forms afterward is benign.

You can bring the horse to the vet Pickerington, OH to treat any crack in the hoof. Learn more here.
