According to enthusiasts, the history of Bergamasco Sheepdogs— also known as Bergamschi— began 7,000 years ago in the Middle East. Some people believe they are descendants of the Gallic herders and the Briard. Meanwhile, Italians claim that if Bergamaschi had led their way to the west of the Middle East, they would've passed by Italy first. The breed's name came from Bergamo, an Italian city atop the Alps. Their flocked coats protected them from the harsh conditions in the mountains.
After the 2nd World War, the Bergamasco Sheepdog population in Italy began to decrease. Fortunately, many enthusiasts have managed to restabilize their population. And in 1956, the FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale) accepted them.
The AKC started to officially recognize Bergamaschi in the herding group in 2015. The fans of this breed all over the world are still advocating for the acceptance of this breed into other clubs.
