Although they're not Terriers, Affenpinschers were bred to do what Terriers do. They used to exterminate rats and pests in stables in Germany in the 1600s, and their name literally means "ape terrier" or "monkey dog." They were also used to get rid of mice indoors. As time passed, Affens served as ratters during the day and bed-warming companions for the night.
Affens are believed to be great factors in developing later European dog breeds like the Miniature Schnauzer and Brussels Griffon. The breed first existed in Germany and France during the late 1800s. In 1936, Affens were added to the American Kennel Club's ranks. Because of the charm they've developed from stables, kitchens, and then to boudoir, Affens became the show ring's popular pets. In 2013, Banana Joe, an Affen, won Best in Show in the Westminster Club. Overall, Affens are great in therapy, agility, and obedience, and their ratters' instincts didn't fade.
